Achieving growth and success often hinges on our ability setting and achieving recruiting goals. But, have you ever delved into the science behind goal setting? This blog post embarks on an enlightening journey into the neuroscience of setting goals, revealing how a deeper understanding of our brains can significantly enhance our effectiveness in achieving them. We’ll explore the impact of concrete planning, the role of dopamine in motivation, and an intriguing concept known as “space-time bridging.”

The Power of Concrete Planning
When setting goals, clarity in planning is non-negotiable. Research indicates that moderately challenging goals, rather than overly simple or exceptionally difficult ones, are key to maintaining long-term motivation. A well-defined action plan helps us stay on course and make consistent progress towards our aspirations. Breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable milestones allows for more accurate progress tracking and the flexibility to adapt our strategies as needed.
The Surprising Motivation of Anticipating Failure
Contrary to the common practice of visualizing success, studies suggest that anticipating potential failures can be more motivating. This approach involves preparing for and thinking about possible setbacks, enabling us to steer clear of missteps. Utilizing our innate fear and anxiety as motivators, this method should be balanced with positive reinforcement to ensure a healthy and effective pursuit of goals.
Visualizing success can certainly be beneficial and inspiring, but it may also create an unrealistic expectation that everything will go smoothly. When we fail to account for potential roadblocks, we may find ourselves unprepared and demotivated when faced with setbacks. On the other hand, by embracing the idea of potential failure, we become better equipped to overcome obstacles, building resilience and adaptability in the process.
It is important, however, to strike a balance between anticipating failures and maintaining a positive outlook. While acknowledging potential setbacks can provide motivation, dwelling excessively on them can lead to anxiety and self-doubt. Therefore, it is crucial to pair this approach with positive reinforcement to foster a healthy and productive mindset.
By celebrating small victories and recognizing our progress along the way, we can maintain a sense of momentum and positivity throughout our journey. This positive reinforcement acts as a powerful counterbalance to the potential anxieties associated with anticipating failures. It helps us stay focused, motivated, and resilient, even when faced with obstacles or unexpected challenges.
Dopamine: The Driving Force of Motivation
Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, is fundamental in our pursuit of goals. It creates a sense of eagerness and readiness to chase our aspirations. Dopamine also helps produce molecules like epinephrine and norepinephrine, priming us for action. By regularly setting and rewarding ourselves for small achievements, we can tap into this dopamine-driven motivational system, boosting our chances of success.
Recruiters need this dopamine hit. It’s what keeps their energy and focus at higher levels which naturally translates to higher performance. This is why this step is so important in setting and achieving recruiting goals.
Space-Time Bridging: Enhancing Goal Achievement
This technique leverages our visual system to shift our focus from our immediate surroundings to external, broader horizons. It’s about staying fixated on long-term goals while recognizing and celebrating the small wins along the way. By bridging our immediate environment with our future aspirations, we maintain a consistent and focused drive towards our goals.
This is a critical step in setting and achieving recruiting goals. High performance recruiting teams want and need to understand how their short term goals align with the organization’s long term planning. Take the time to establish and explain the why to your team and then watch them soar.
Importance of Setting Higher Goals
High performance teams should have goals based on high performance. Setting and achieving recruiting goals is a tricky area for most leaders I consult. They tend to set goals more toward those who are in the average performance. As an example, let’s say you have a sales group and your two top performers produce an average of $1,000 per day. Your average team member does half that at $500. If you set the goals at %500, you’re cutting your ability to achieve in half.
One thing most leaders do not understand is that everyone wants to achieve at some level, especially recruiters. We’re naturally competitive so if when you set the goals, set them based on your high performers. Then it is up to you to coach and mentor the rest of the team to achieve that number. (I explain more about this in the video above).
Conclusion
Understanding the neuroscience behind goal setting offers invaluable insights into our brain’s functioning and how we can optimize our goal pursuit. By employing strategies like concrete planning, anticipating failures, harnessing the power of dopamine, and practicing space-time bridging, we can significantly improve our focus, motivation, and overall success in achieving our goals. Whether you’re aiming for professional or personal growth, integrating these neuroscience-based approaches into your goal-setting routine could be a game changer. Here’s to your journey towards success!
Remember how neural circuits are involved in goal pursuit and the effective ways to set and achieve goals? Focusing on distant objectives activates neural circuits associated with long-term goal pursuit. Remember, setting specific, achievable goals, limiting their number, and regularly reviewing progress are fundamental for successful goal attainment.
